| Preservation or Destruction of the Decker Terrier? |
| I can't help but wonder, as I see many troubling directions that breeders are taking, as to the future of the Decker Terrier... As the title insinuates, is the breed being preserved or are they headed for destruction? In my opinion, the introduction of them being registered as just rat terriers with the UKC and AKC is a sure sign of where the breed/line is headed. Very little if anything good has ever come from registering dogs with either of these two registries... Except, for those wanting to get more money for their dogs... The only thing I see that this has brought about, is the beginning of the Decker to be absorbed into the standard rat terrier, or possibly becoming the "new" standard rat terrier... It has gone from breeding them as hunting dogs, to breeding them as show dogs.... I hear time and time again that it is a way of getting them exposed to the public... therefore getting new breeders, etc... BS... If the preservation of the breed was number one on everyones list they would be exposing these dogs to hunters... dog shows are not where hunters look for dogs.... Also, what hunter can afford to pay $1000-1500 for a pup? This is totally obsurd, this just shows that these breeders are more interested in how much they can get for a pup rather than where the pup goes... There is no hunter going to pay that price and then take it out and turn it loose on game that could potenially be a risk, not to mention the dangers of roads.... Not to mention there isn't much chance of a hunter paying less, with the breeder holding a certain amount of control over the dog... Come on people get your heads out of your .... and wake up and smell the roses.... the breed as we know it is headed for sure destruction with this type of preservation going on... |
